It’s my contention that, many of the things that people adored about Jimmy were the wrong things, not the things that one should have adored about Jimmy. By that I simply mean that the things he hated in himself, and tried to escape from, were the things that many of his fans adored. This kind of seeming “rebel”, this kind of eccentric, and so on. Jimmy had actually a kind of conservative fantasy about what he wanted to do. He wanted tranquility, he wanted to create in some way, he wanted to be kind of an intellectual… I think that this kind of “runaway” - the leather jacketed man running away from society - was the kind of thing that Jimmy was compelled to do, but at the same time there was a part of him that didn’t want to do it. - Leonard Rosenman
